How to FTP using Internet Explorer

To FTP a file from your local computer to your website, you may utilize an FTP program such as WSFTP… or you may use your Internet Explorer Browser.  For instructions on how to FTP using the internet explorer browser, please see below…

If using Internet Explorer 5.5 - 6

*** Before starting ***

Make sure you are using Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. (Click the "Help" menu, and then the "About" option)

Make sure that Internet Explorer is enabled to function as an FTP client (Click the "Tools" menu, then the "Internet Options" option, then the "Advanced" tab. In this tab, find the "Enable folder view for FTP sites" check button. Make sure that this button IS checked)

Instructions for creating FTP connection:

1.  Open Internet Explorer.

2.  In the Address Bar, type in ftp://ftp.YOURDOMAINNAME.COM and press enter. (replace yourdomainname.com with your FTP information which can be found on the Web Site Summary page after loggind into the Siteutil (http://www.siteutil.com)

3.  When a window pops up requesting your username and password, enter your NT User Account for the username and NT User Account password for the password.

4.  Browse to the source folder where the file you need to FTP is located.  (we recommend making the window smaller so you are able to view that folder as well as the newly created FTP connection in your Internet Explorer Browser.)

5.  drag and drop the file from your local source folder to the FTP connection/folder in the Internet Explorer Browser.

If using Internet Explorer 7

Instructions for creating FTP connection:

1.  Open Internet Explorer.

2.  In the Address Bar, type in ftp://ftp.YOURDOMAINNAME.COM and press enter.

3.  When a window pops up requesting your username and password, enter your NT User Account for the username and NT User Account password for the password.

4.  Then click the Page menu and choose: Open this FTP site in Windows explorer.

5.  Enter your username and password again.

6.  Browse to the source folder where the file you need to FTP is located.  (we recommend making the window smaller so you are able to view that folder as well as the newly created FTP connection in your Internet Explorer Browser.)

7.  drag and drop the file from your local source folder to the FTP connection/folder in the Internet Explorer Browser.

If you require a special folder for your FTP uploads, please see below on how to create and set permissions for your FTP folder.

1.  Using the instructions above, open an FTP connection to your ftp site.

2.  Once connected, you can right mouse click to create a ‘new folder’

3.  Give the folder a name.  (we recommend giving the same name to the folder as the same name you will use to FTP to the FTP folder.  Eg. ftp folder = UPLOADS.  FTP username should then be “UPLOADS”.

4.  Close your browser to disconnect.

5.  Log into siteutil (http://www.siteutil.com)

6.  Select ‘NT USER ACCOUNT’

7.  Click on ‘add new user’

8.  Fill in the information (remember this should be the same as the name given to the FTP folder)

9.  Next, select ‘folder permissions’

10.From the ‘set permissions user id’ drop down, select the newly created NT User Account. Eg. UPLOADS.

11.From the ‘set permissions permissions’ drop down, select ‘read only’

12.Let the permissions set complete – click the ‘return to siteutil’ at the bottom right of your screen.

13.Select ‘folder permissions’ once more

14.In the ‘Folders’ column, select your newly created folder eg. UPLOADS

15.From the ‘set permissions user id’ drop down, select the newly created NT User Account eg. UPLOADS.

16.From the ‘set permissions permissions’ drop down, select ‘read/write’.

17.Let the permissions set complete – click the ‘return to siteutil’ at the bottom right of your screen.
