How to configure Outlook to receive e-mail messages from an IMAP server

Like (POP3), the IMAP4 protocol uses port 25 Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) to send messages, but an IMAP4 server uses port 143 to listen for messages.

Unlike POP3, IMAP4 allows you to store your messages by default on the server, instead of downloading them locally.

Use one of the following methods to configure Outlook as an IMAP4 client.

Method 1: Microsoft Office Outlook 2010

  1. Start Outlook.
  2. On the File menu, click Info and click Account Settings.
  3. Select Account Settings from the list.
  4. On the E-mail tab, click New and Select Email Account, and then click Next
  5. Click to select the Manually configure server settings or additional server types check box, and then click Next.
  6. Click Internet E-Mail, and then click Next.
  7. In the Server Information section, select IMAP for Account Type.
  8. In the Your Name box, enter your name exactly as you want it to appear to recipients.
  9. In the E-mail Address box, type your e-mail address.
  10. In the User Name box, type your email address.
  11. In the Password box, type your password.
  12. In the Incoming mail server box, type the name of your IMAP4 server. (mail.hostdepot.com)
  13. In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) box, type the name of your SMTP server. (smtp.hostdepot.com)

Note IMAP4 is a retrieval protocol. You must have SMTP to send your messages. If you try to send and are not successful, it may be that your ISP does not allow sending mail through our mail servers. This means that it will be necessary to use port 587 for your SMTP port instead of port 25.
  14. Click More Settings
  15. Select Outgoing Server
  16. Verify these settings
  • The check box beside My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication is selected.
  • The radio button beside Use same settings as my incoming mail server is selected.
