How do I configure my dialup connection (Windows XP)?

Follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your modem is operating properly. If you are using an external modem make sure it is properly connected to your PC. Check the owner's manual if you are not sure.

  2. In Windows XP click the Start button, then click Control Panel.

  3. From the Control Panel window double-click Network Connections.

  4. From the Network Connections window double-click New Connection Wizard to start the wizard that will guide you through the process.

  5. In the New Connection Wizard, click Next to skip the Welcome panel.

  6. From the Network Connection Type panel select Connect to the Internet and click Next.

  7. From the Getting Ready panel select Set up my connection manually and click Next.

  8. From the Internet Connection panel select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.

  9. In the Connection Name panel enter Host Depot or a similar name for this connection. Click Next.

  10. In the Phone Number to Dial panel enter the local access phone number given to you by Host Depot when you signed up for service. Click Next.

  11. In the Connection Availability panel select Anyone's use if you want anyone who uses this PC to be able to use this connection, or select My use only if you want to be the only one who can use this connection on this PC. Click Next.

  12. In the Internet Account Information panel enter the User name and Password you selected when you signed up for dial-up service with Host Depot. Reenter the password in the Confirm password box. Be sure it is spelled correctly and uses the correct case. You may select Make this the default Internet connection if you do not have any other Internet connections at this time. You may also select Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection if you desire this service (recommended). Click Next.

  13. In the Completing the New Connection Wizard panel you may select Add a shortcut to this connection to my desktop. Click Finish.

  14. Your connection is now ready and should appear in the Network Connections window under the name entered in step 9.

  15. If a dialog box appears titled Connect ISP-Name Dial-up, where ISP-Name is the name entered in step 9, you may click Dial to connect to Host Depot. Do not enter the Password unless you are changing it. If the connection is successful you may now access the Internet using a browser. Make sure the browser is configured to use this connection. If the connection is not successful, review all previous steps and check that the phone number is the local access number we supplied for your area. Windows XP also provides Help and Troubleshooting tips to check the proper operation of your modem and port.

  16. To use this connection double-click the desktop shortcut if you selected that option in step 13. Alternatively, double-click the connection name (from step 9) in the Network Connections window. To make changes to the connection right-click on the connection name in the Network Connections window of the Control Panel and click Properties.
